New RV-8 Project at Haverfordwest. 27th September 2009
Following contact from a Mr Bob Ellis about a project he is underataking, we thought it only best to place an article in our news pages to feature Bobs task. A brief insight into Bob is seen below which was taken from Bobs own build website.
www.rv-8.co.uk From here you will be able to see Bobs progress as he shows you steps along his long journey.
Hi my name is Bob Ellis and I was born in 1958. My father took me on holiday to Heathrow in 1970 and watching the planes triggered in me the desire to fly. After a few failed attempts to enter the RAF I was in the right place at the right time when the RAF was short of pilots in 1976. I joined the RAF in 1977 at the green age of 18 and I distinctly remember writing in an “about me” letter that my long term ambition was to build my own plane.Well 29 years later I have started to live that dream, the frightening thing though is how fast those 29 years have gone. I wouldn’t be able to live this dream without the support and approval of my lovely wife Jill, who I know is looking forward to those cross country flights in the future. I also believe that with a project of this size two heads are better than one and I am being abley assisted by my friend Simon.
I do not intend to log every step of the build as people like Dan Checkoway (US) and Richard Horan (UK) have done a wonderful job. I simply wish to record the main steps and add, or reinforce, ideas and techniques wherever I can. I hope you find my log useful if you are researching or thinking about building an RV8/8A. Please contact me if you find any mistakes or any questions about the project.

We here at EGFE Movements would like to wish Bob all the very best with his build and look foward to the inaugural flight.
Keep checking back to watch for small updates of Bobs work….

Sea Plane on Tenby Shores:
Possibilty of a future sea plane service from Haverfordwest.. Press Article by Narberth and Whitland Observer.
Beach-goers at Tenby’s South Beach witnessed an unusual sight on Saturday afternoon – a seaplane landing offshore.
The visit, by Euro Seaplane Services Limited, was to seek suitable water landing areas along the South Wales coast.
“With Saturday’s south-westerly breeze at Tenby, the conditions were excellent, especially with the protection of Caldey Island from the Bristol Channel swell,” said Captain John Russell, managing director of Euro Seaplane Services Limited.
The company is based in Blackbushe, near Farnborough, and the flight took about two hours.
Continued Captain Russell: “We hope to visit the area again later in the summer and may be able to offer some water experience trips from Haverfordwest Airfield.”
He explained that the aircraft was a Cessna 182 Amphibian, which means there are retractable wheels in the floats to allow operations on grass and runways, as well as on the water.
“With four wheels rather than the normal three, runway landings are a bit like landing a supermarket trolley, but at least all the wheels want to go in the same direction!” he added.
The aircraft clocked up its 400th water landing at Tenby, this figure achieved over a period of just over two years, since it was converted from a landplane onto floats.
The aircraft has flown to various parts of the UK and Europe, including Biscarrosse (the French home of flying boats near Bordeaux), the Cote D’Azur and the Italian Lakes.
Added Captain Russell: “In September, we will be flying to Germany to take part in the first ever German Fly-In to the River Moselle, as part of the Bernkastel Festival. Next year, we will be returning to Biscarrosse to celebrate the centenary of water flying.”

BPPA Flying Event.
Just an early warning for those who may wish to attend the Precision Flying Event at Haverfordwest on the 20th June 2009.
There should be a wide turn out of aircraft in all shapes and sizes, if my memory serves me right there were about 20 visiting aircraft alone.. with some more picking it up on the grape vine and just coming in to add to the traffic.
I for one shall be there along with a few others so should be a good day. Café etc will all be open so plenty of food around.
Cheers All…………. May See you there.

Pegasus Helicoper could bring Jobs to Pembrokshire
Pembrokeshire could become the European manufacturing base for a revolutionary new helicopter.
Up to 50 jobs could be created if American company the Pegasus Helicopter Group decides to build its new Pegasus PH200PJ helicopter in the county.
A spokesman said the company is looking at a facility in Haverfordwest.
“Pegasus is currently considering basing its European manufacturing facilities in Pembrokeshire,” they said.
“The facility under consideration is near Haverfordwest Airport. The company is also considering a site in Cardiff to be used for flight demonstrations and training.
“Pegasus’ manufacturing facility would look to employ up to 50 people over the next two years.”
Pegasus chief executive Bob Zummo, has already been on a tour of Wales with representatives from International Business Wales, the Welsh Assembly organisation which aims to attract investment to the country.
Pegasus has designed and tested a revolutionary helicopter using pressure jet technology, which eliminates the need for a tail rotor, tail rotor gear box, tail rotor drive and tail boom.
As the technology cuts down on the number of parts used compared to a conventional helicopter, the cost is significantly reduced, with the model expected to retail for about £105,000 (in kit form) and £175,000 (fully certified).
The company is currently marketing the helicopter to civilian, commercial and military markets worldwide, with agreements already in place to distribute 655 helicopters in China, Taiwan, Brazil, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States over the next four years.
Registered Change Of Owner:
G-IMLI is no longer owned by Oakwood Theme Park as they sold out this year, this now is registered to the parks old owners wife, J Mc Namara. Remains based Haverfordwest 03.09.08

G-CFGA Vickers Supermarine SPITFIRE VIII. Been at location in hangar 2 for some time now and under going restoration. Press Release seen below
Shadow Welsh heritage minister Paul Davies has visited one of Pembrokeshire’s most ambitious history projects – a £1.5 million scheme to rebuild a Spitfire.
It is hoped that work will start this month on rebuilding the tail section of the Mark 8 Spitfire which is housed at Withybush airfield.
“It was fascinating to see the fuselage of the plane and to be talked through the task ahead of the team,” said Mr. Davies, who is also Preseli Pembrokeshire’s Assembly Member.
“This is an exciting project which will bring a part of history to life and will be a valuable educational tool in the county – what better way can there be to spark an interest in history than by letting pupils see and touch Britain’s most iconic plane?”
The Welsh Spitfire Company has set itself the task of raising £1.5 million in three years to buy and restore the plane. If it succeeds, the plane will be one of only five flying Spitfires of its type.
“We are hoping to start work on the tail section soon,” said company fund-raising director, Peter Kraus.
The project took a major step forward last week when, after six months of research, the Civil Aviation Authority agreed to register the Spitfire with the number G-CFGA.
“This is a major milestone for us as the CAA has now acknowledged the Pembrokeshire Spitfire; no plane can fly without being registered,” explained company managing director, Ray Burgess.
Members of the Spitfire team will now be giving talks on the project to as many local groups, schools and colleges as possible in return for practical or financial support.
“We want this to be Pembrokeshire’s plane and for people in the county to get involved. Then, when they see it flying, they can say they helped to put it back in the sky,” added Mr. Kraus.
“There’s a lot of work to be done and we hope that groups such as engineering students and local companies will be able to help us.
“People can also help in other ways, such as volunteering for our new charity shop in Willings Passage in Pembroke. The shop is going well, but I still need volunteers for three days a week and even if you can’t weld, then maybe you could help out by manning the till for a few hours.”
